Pre winter mowing of Buffalo Blue Grama Grass #773066

Asked September 25, 2021, 4:58 PM EDT

Greetings, Should we mow our Buffalo-Blue Grama grass before the winter? We are worried about snow mold in shaded areas. We will mow it in the spring before it starts growing. This is the first year that we didn't mow our Buffalo-Blue Grama except in the spring. We really enjoyed having it long all season! Thanks, Jonathan (Jay) and Nancy Koch

Expert Response

Hi Jay and Nancy,

No, I wouldn't mow it now...wait until spring (if you want to mow at all). Mowing now can expose soil, which might reduce hardiness around the plant, leading to winterkill. These are not species that generally get snow mold and the site looks exposed and sunny. Snow mold is generally in shaded areas where the house or other structures intercept light.
