how to get rid of sumac suckers in my lawn #772766

Asked September 22, 2021, 11:07 PM EDT

I am getting sumac suckers in my lawn from a patch of sumac in a natural area adjacent to my lawn. How can I treat the sumac without damaging my lawn? I've read that triclopyr sprayed on the suckers will get rid of them, but It sounds like triclopyr will also kill grass. Is that true? If yes, are their other options that are safe for lawns?

Anoka County Minnesota

Expert Response

Triclopyr if used cautiously does not kill the grass. There maybe some affect but grass recovers. The information on the link provides information on how to use it. Fall application works best and follow up will be needed. I always choose treating just the weed to reduce the amount of herbicide used. I favor basal application.

For long term control of the suckers severe them each year by inserting a spade into the ground about 8 inches deep along the sumac bed. If that isn’t enough a barrier of metal like roofing flashing can be inserted vertically into the ground along the bed. It obviously is labor intensive but is a more permanent solution.

Thank you Evelyn.  Regarding the Triclopyr, could you provide guidance on which product to use (3 or 4) and how to mix and apply it?  Could you also explain what basal application means?  I read the article you linked me to, but I still have those lingering questions.

Thanks,

Allen

Use Garlon 4 or Triclopyr 4, follow the directions for applying it on the label. One must follow the directions for the product they buy. All pesticides are regulated and the label is legally required.
Basal application means you cut off the sumac close to the ground and apply the product to the cut stem. Or don’t cut it off but treat the bottom 6 inches with herbicide all the way around the stem.

Thanks Evelyn.  I read the info in the article a few times, along with your advice below, and I think I have a much better understanding now.  Thanks much for all your help!

Allen

You are welcome. Sumac are beautiful especially in the fall but they can be a pain.
