Please identify flowers #772623

Asked September 21, 2021, 8:36 PM EDT

Can you please help me identify the two plants in these pictures? The one with red flowers (seems to attract a lot of hummingbirds) and the one will white flowers.

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

The red is salvia and a favorite of hummingbirds. The white is phlox. Lovely combination.

Thanks for your help!

They grew a lot bigger than I expected, but I really like them both, so am planning to plant them somewhere next year where they will have more space.

It is a combination worth repeating. Held up in the heat too.

Hi Evelyn,

Since I see you are a tree advisor, can I please ask you one more question?

I am thinking of planting one or two or three Aspen trees in our yard, which is an average size yard - not huge.
But, I was reading about possible trouble with Aspen spreading naturally out of control.

Do you see that to be an issue?
And, do Aspen grow well in Minnesota?

We lost our main front tree - an Ash - so I’m considering options.  My husband - who is currently on hospice - and I used to live in Colorado, and we loved aspen. So, I thought that would be a nice way of remembering that time of our lives after my husband is gone.

Thanks,
Amy

Unfortunately Aspen do not grow well in MN. They will grow for about a decade before succumbing to our much hotter summers. They also do not tolerate soggy soil. They are lovely trees and l love the movement of the wind through their leaves. No worries they will not take over like they can in more favorable climates.
The fact sheet has trees that do well here and are suited to urban yards.

Take care.
