Dangerous tree #772599

Asked September 21, 2021, 6:19 PM EDT

Hi, Since the last storm a tree became very dangerous. It is located in the Timberlawn Community which is part of the Grosvenor Luxmanor Tributary Stream Restoration. The tree is probably about 100 feet high. My understanding is that the tree in question is already supposed to be removed at some point.

Expert Response

We are uncertain if you are asking if the tree should be removed or if you have another question about the tree highlighted. It is commonplace for degraded streams in human-altered landscapes to undercut their banks during flooding events and cause root exposure like this, though we do not have the arborist training or expertise to determine how much of a fall risk the tree poses. Plenty of wild trees exist in this state for decades without falling, but storm events of increasing severity due to climate change may influence that. Plus, in developed areas, one needs to consider the hazards to people and property if a tree were to fall. Certified arborists are best consulted regarding tree health and safety, but otherwise, in this situation, a tree of concern should be reported to the landowner (which may be the municipality, or occasionally a utility) or an HOA.
