Recommended varieties of pink dogwoods to plant #772585

Asked September 21, 2021, 4:39 PM EDT

Many years ago pink dogwoods were planted around the perimeter of the sanctuary parking lot at my church. Today, just a few of those trees remain. There is interest in replacing those trees which have died. I am interested in receiving recommendations of the varieties of pink dogwoods which would be considered to be the best choices for our purpose, hopefully ones which may have disease resistance and suitable for our location.

Expert Response

Dogwood trees grow best in morning sun and afternoon shade. If in full sun, they will require moisture during dry periods. Make sure mulch is no thicker than several inches and away from the base of the trunk.

Dogwood trees can be susceptible to powdery mildew, spot anthracnose, and discula anthracnose. The last disease has not been much of a problem in recent years.

Select disease-resistant dogwood cultivars to reduce the chances of problems with common dogwood diseases. Refer to the table below for recommendations. It is important to note that disease-resistant does not mean immune to disease. Even disease-resistant dogwoods may develop problems if they are planted in an unsuitable environment (full sun, drought, flooding).

For pink varieties take a look at Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) 'Cherokee Brave' and

Hybrid Dogwood (C. florida x C. kousa) 'Stellar Pink'.
