Lantern Fly #772559

Asked September 21, 2021, 2:45 PM EDT

I work on Perry Point Md. VAMHCS as the only pest controller onsite; is there an expectation from me to report and attempt any control of these insects? They are broadly dispersed on campus here and I am being asked the question from the Environmental section.

Expert Response

You are well within the known infestation area for Spotted Lanternfly, unfortunately, but you can still report populations you are seeing to the MDA. This page contains lanternfly biology and management information, including MDA contact information and a link to Cornell's map of known populations: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/spotted-lanternfly-management-residents

You can ask the MDA about whether they suggest you attempt control of this pest and by what means, since indiscriminate insecticide use is neither recommended nor useful, and some active ingredients will have more impact than others. Depending on the plants you desire to protect on the campus, different treatments or monitoring advice may apply.
