Grape vine in wild area near pond #772546

Asked September 21, 2021, 2:06 PM EDT

Hello. We live on a pond and have a natural area between the pond and yard. Grapevine is taking over the area and is causing the grasses and other plants to disappear. We've cut it back and pulled out roots we can get to - but it just returns. We'd like to get rid of the grapevine - but don't want to use chemicals that will harm the pond or animals. What do you recommend?

Expert Response

This publication from Penn State will give you options.  It probably would be best to cut the vine, leaving a flat surface, and then 'paint' the cut end immediately with a non-selective herbicide.  That means the herbicide will only be on the vine and not on other plants or in the water.  Invasive Weeds - Wild Grape (psu.edu)
