Wintering over potted knockout rose #772533

Asked September 21, 2021, 12:56 PM EDT

I am vacationing in 10 days and will be gone until 10/23. Should I plant my potted knockout rose in the ground now? It has been in the pot all season. Or winter over? If so, in garage vs plant pot in raised bed? Vs unk. Please advise. TY. Mary

Expert Response

We presume the rose has been outside and is accustomed to outdoor conditions.  If so, this is a good time to take it out of the pot and plant it in the ground in a sunny spot.

I you want to keep it in the pot, sink the pot into the ground up to the rim. Surrounding the sunk pot with mulch may be beneficial.

Overwintering the plant indoors in a cold place (20-45 degrees) might be an option, but temperatures often fall lower than that in an unheated garage.

In any case, be sure the rose gets plenty of water while you are gone.
