ant colony resistant to borax #772407

Asked September 20, 2021, 12:59 PM EDT

I have been feeding terro and other borax based ant-killers to a colony for the last three months. While there seemed to be initial success, over the last several weeks it has been not no avail. The ants build these beige-colored modules (storing the sugar?) collecting them outside the crack between baseboards through which they travel -- see photo. What else should I use? What are my options?

Expert Response

Hello,
Ants can be very diverse and don't all have the same diets, therefore they may respond differently to different ant baits. It is possible you have a different kind of ant from before.  You may want to try a different kind of bait, or if possible I would recommend bringing an insect sample into your county extension office for a Master Gardener to identify.  Knowing what type of ant you have could help in understanding what food source they are attracted to.  If you decide to bring in a sample please contact them first to learn of office hours and to be certain they have Master Gardeners available.
