Should cottonwood tree be cut down? #771937

Asked September 16, 2021, 2:41 PM EDT

I have a very tall cotton wood that appears to be in stress. Do you think I should have it cut down? Thank you, Ray Kettel

Expert Response

Hello,

Those wounds are a bit worrysome and could be causing the trunk to be less structurally sound. When the living tissue of trees is damaged in the trunk, that damage is usually reflected in the canopy of the tree. Are there dead branches? Are the leaves green? Those answers could provide more information about the tree's health. Also, if the tree is in danger of falling on a structure that can also factor into the decision.

If you'd like an expert to assess the tree, I recommend hiring a certified arborist. Arborists are certified through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and some arborists are "qualified" (which means certified) in hazard tree assessment. This is the link at which you can find a certified arborist:

In the right hand column of the search results, look for Hazard Tree Qualification and contact someone with that rating.

I hope this helps. If you have more questions, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you,

Julie
