Black Cherry Tree (?) #771034

Asked September 07, 2021, 11:52 AM EDT

I have what I assume is a black cherry tree (prunus serotina) next to our driveway that is dropping a prodigious amount of tiny black/dk. purple/dk blue berries onto the driveway. Is it a sign of stress?

Take a look at wildflower.org.....  and search the data base for your tree.  Click on native plants, then search for plants, then the plant name.
There is a lot of information about the native cherry which you might find interesting especially that it drops a lot of twigs, leaves and fruit.
Perhaps the conditions were such this year that the tree had a large fruit set....  Our weather was interesting this year.... a lot of rain early on and then dry with very hot temperatures.
These weather extremes can affect trees.  Watch for yellowing leaves,or branch die back .   Usually, if a fruiting tree produces a lot of fruit, take it as a good sign.
