Small Bugs in Alfalfa Hay #770891

Asked September 06, 2021, 12:08 PM EDT

Hello! I recently purchased some 3rd cutting alfalfa hay from Madrid Iowa. After unloading the hay I noticed small, Poppy seed sized insects crawling in the hay in masses. They are black to brown in color. I reached out to the individual I purchased the hay from to see if they knew what they were and did not receive a response. I was hoping you could assist with identification of the insects and let me know if they present any concerns to our horses that will be eating the hay or infestation to our barn/property. Thank you, Stephanie

The images look like the darkling beetle which comes from the mealworm.
A good article on the beetle is located at https://kentuckypestnews.wordpress.com/2014/06/17/darkling-mealworm-beetles-found-in-baled-alfalfa/
They are not toxic to horses but in heavy infestations, some horses may have gastrointestinal issues. I would suggest using a pyrethrins spray labeled for use in feed storage areas to spray around your hay.
