Prairie Cascade willow disease #770884

Asked September 06, 2021, 11:26 AM EDT

My two Prairie Cascade willows that we’re planted May 2021 developed discolored leaves and also is losing leaves mainly on lower branches. Trees are about 12 feet tall with 2 inch diameter trunks. They are planted in a wetland area next to a drainage stream. Both have the same problem.

Hennepin County Minnesota

Thank you for writing.

Send me a picture of the trunk where it enters the ground.  Remove a plastic collar if there is one first.

Thank you for writing back.  I believe that this could be Willow scab.  Notice how the blackened area on leaves is now showing as a black bump at the base of the leaf in D29DD

I suggest that you contact an arborist to confirm the diagnosis and then decide on a plan to proceed.
