Ice plants #770098

Asked August 31, 2021, 4:40 PM EDT

Why are my ice planters dying? I hear they bloom better without much water, but mine looks awful. They have all gotten like this.

Expert Response

Hello,
Have you been watering the ice plants?  How long were the plants in place, had they established prior to the summer drought?  It's hard to say without more information what the problem is.  Have you checked the roots of the plants to see if they look healthy?

I think the issue may be water related, either they weren't established and got too dry or perhaps they were watered too much and the roots rotted.

With a bit more information hopefully we can come to a determination of the problem with these plants.

Hi there---
I planted these before the big heat wave, but probably after the drought.  (I can't remember if it ever rained after I got these).  But, I watered them a lot during the heat of the summer. They didn't bloom much, just a few blooms.  So I quit after reading that they bloom better when dehydrated.  Gradually, they just died.  Maybe I should water once a week?
Thank you,
Stephanie

Hello,
Ice plants are pretty drought tolerant, but if  they weren't established prior to being completely dry they could struggle.  Conversely overwatering could be detrimental as well. You can try watering occasionally, perhaps once every week or two and hopefully they will come back.

Thank you! I'll try that.
By the way, the advice you gave me on my rosebush was spot on!  It's looking much better now.
Thank you
