Dead grass in lawn is spreading - Trying to identify root cause #770008

Asked August 31, 2021, 10:53 AM EDT

Hello. In early August I had a few small dead spots in my backyard lawn, which has now spread to about 70% of my backyard. I dug up soil and could not find any grubs, and have not had an issue with moles, birds, racoons, or skunks digging in the lawn. I suspected a lawn disease and applied Scotts DiseaseEx (Azoxystrobin) on 8/13 and 8/29. I am concerned that I have not identified the root cause of the problem. I appreciate any ideas or suggestions that you can pass along. Attached are a few pictures. Thank you! Mark Kinnamon

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to diagnose turf diseases in this forum. However, you can use a hand lens to look at your grass blades, and compare to the diseases here, you may be able to spot something. http://www.msuturfdiseases.net/browse-by-name/ You could also contact MSU Plant Diagnostic lab and send in a sod sample. https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

I hope this helps. Thanks for using our service.
