The spider is an Orb Weaver, Araneus diadematus, a common spider here in the Pacific Northwest. They're one of the spiders that suspend large flat webs -- webs that resemble multi-spoked wagon wheels -- across pathways. (You know, the webs that hit you in the face when you take the trash out!)
Yes, these spiders are big. But they're not dangerous to people. Just annoying!
