Invasive or Native #769383

Asked August 27, 2021, 11:16 AM EDT

Please help me identify the attached plant. What is it and is it a native plant or invasive. I think it is a type of cranberry viburnum. Your thoughts? If it's native, how is it pruned? If it's invasive I'll remove it.

Olmsted County Minnesota

Expert Response

Viburnum are not invasive plants. They are actually quite desirable as they have good fall color, fruit for birds, and spring flowers. They usually require little in the way of pruning except to shape the plant a bit. Because they bloom in spring, they should be pruned shortly after blooming so as not to prune off next year's flower buds.

If the shrub stems are very thick and lack much in the way of foliage and flowers, you may want to try renewal pruning
