Mugo Pine: Needles turning brown on the shrub #769236

Asked August 26, 2021, 11:17 AM EDT

The needles on our Mugo pine shrub are turning brown. The tips are still green, but the needles further down each branch are turning brown. It gets plenty of water, the same as it has gotten for many years. The shrub is 25 to 30 years old.

Expert Response

HI Doug,

Thanks for your question.  It is difficult to diagnose a problem without seeing it. All pines shed their old needles after a period of time.  Is this a new problem or has it been occurring annually.  Browning on the inside might indicate a pest problem. Have you noticed any insect activity on your Mugo pine?  Spider mites would be difficult to see, but they leave a fine web on the branches.  If you cot off a sample of the problem and take it to CSU Co-op Extension office, they might be able to help diagnose the problem.  888 E.
