Diseased Black Cherry Trees #768759

Asked August 23, 2021, 3:13 PM EDT

I have several diseased black cherry trees. The choke cherry trees in the same area do not seem to have any damage. What would cause this problem?

Isabella County Michigan

Expert Response

Hello,

Black cherry (Prunus serotina) like all cherries, is susceptible to many insect and disease pests including leaf spot, powdery mildew, aphids to name a few. Read more here: http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=286398

Unfortunately, it is difficult to analyze the culprit(s) from the pictures. The choke cherries in the same area may not be susceptible to the insects or diseases which are attacking the black cherry.

To obtain a more detailed diagnosis and management of the problem, you can send a sample/photo to the MSU Extension’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab. To learn how to submit a sample, go to: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

You can also consult a certified arborist to assess the trees. To find an arborist in your area, go to: www.treesaregood.org, the website of the International Society of Arboriculture.
