Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Jeffrey.  The needles are clearly a pine tree, and several varieties of pine have these tight groups of needles.  The most probable is the Ponderosa pine, but it could also be a Bishop pine.  Without a closeup photo of the bark, I can't give you a definitive answer.  Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I went back to the park and it looked just like the tree that was marked as a Ponderosa. Thanks.
I've been using "Trees to Know", are there other references (online) that you could suggest?

Jeff:  I have been unable to find an online reference that compares with The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees.  I cannot find a website with it online.
