4th Request: Please reply - Treating strawberries for Anthracnose in a home garden #767812

Asked August 17, 2021, 2:46 PM EDT

I have a devastating problem of Anthracnose infestation of my home strawberry patch.. Your publication on treating strawberries for Anthracnose implies that the only effective fungicide is "Captevate". Where and how can a small home gardener secure a very small supply of Captevate for his small strawberry patch? Please kindly reply this time.

I am quite sure my raised strawberry patch is severally suffering from ANTHRACNOSE. Your on-line publications only mention ONE fungicide for treatment of Anthracnose: CAPTEVATE. HOW and WHERE can a home gardener procure a very small quantity of Captevate?

Hello Michael

CaptEvate is an agricultural use fungicide and so is available at agricultural supply retailers and is packaged for field crops. MSU Extension does not endorse retailers or brands, and so we do not keep lists of suppliers.

CaptEvate is 53% active ingredient Captan, and 14% fenhexamid. Products containing Captan can be used by home gardeners for anthracnose on strawberries. This resource lists two examples. https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/pests-and-problems/pesticides/captan.asp

The strawberry section of this home growers resource may be useful, too. It recommends captan AND thiophanate- methyl for prevention of fruit rots, like anthracnose, on strawberries.

Captevae fungicide EPA registration number 66330-48 is produced for agricultural producers in 10.5 pound packages. The formulation active ingredients are Captan and Fenhexamid. Most fungicide formulations today combine active ingredients to manage for disease resistance. Captan alone should provide protection for anthracnose. Bonide, Fertilome and several other manufacturers of home garden products offer Captan formulations in smaller quantities.
