Fungus (?) on siding #767252

Asked August 13, 2021, 5:07 PM EDT

Hello. We are seeing clusters of very small spheres on our wood siding that is close to the ground, southern exposure. There are native plantings (specific to central Oregon high desert) nearby. There appears to be some wood damage. Initially we thought these were insects, but a pest control professional thought it might be artillery shotgun fungus. I would like your opinion please.

Hi Joanne,  Interesting problem.  Is the soil below covered in wood bark mulch?   Can you send a closer photo of the damage?  Is the siding actually pitted?  It does not look like insect damage to me, but need a better photo.

Hello Amy,
We don’t have any wood bark mulch. I think the siding is pitted in some places. Here are a couple more photos that are closer:

Thank you for your help!

Hi Joanne,  I showed the photos to our plant disease specialist and he was unable to tell based on the photos, say he would need more magnification. And I am unable to tell from the additional photos (thanks for sending) what exactly is going on there.  Its possible that I would be willing to do a site visit in my next rotation to see if I can determine anything else.  Feel free to contact me at the email address below.  Thanks,
