Central Oregon Trees #766574

Asked August 09, 2021, 4:09 PM EDT

I have some property in central Oregon that has only Juniper on it now. I would like to plant some trees that would replace and fill in some areas. I interested in evergreen trees. I was thinking of some ponderosa pines. I am putting together a simple water system to do some light watering while the trees are young. Do you have any suggestions or ideas that would help me? Thank you for your time.

Hi Curtis,   Here is pictorial plant guide you can use to try and select a suitable plant, but yes Ponderosa pine if you have access to some water to get them established. It you are planning to fade out the water it will need to be a native such as Ponderosa pine. I would recommend at least 3-5 years for watering, especially if we continue to have hot, dry summers.  You will also need caging until the trees mature to prevent deer damage.  Try to remove or place new trees so that they are not directly competing with the juniper for water.  https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/em9136
