suggestions for plants, shrubs or flowers to plant in this area #766411

Hello,
These pictures are from my front yard and show an area where the grass no longer grows very well. The area is under a cover of a tall pine tree but receives fair amount of afternoon sun. It is bordered by a sidewalk, a stone wall and a rhodendendron that is doing quite well. Although it may appear to be so, it is not a high traffic area. Because of the pine needles that drop to the ground in this area, I suspect the soil is acidic though i have never formally tested it. In previous years I have added some lime to the area and the grass grows better there for a while but is not very persistent.
Do you have any ideas for what I could plant in this area to make better use of it. I am interested in planting native shrubs, plants and especially flowering plants and ground cover, or multiple combinations thereof, if you think any would thrive in this locale and make the area look better.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Choosing native plants is a great starting point as you design this landscape area. Here are links to some publications about gardening with native plants.
Your lawn fails because of shade and root competition from established trees and shrubs, I think. Consider light, soil drainage, and irrigation options as you choose plants. Visit area nurseries to see what plants are available now or expected in different seasons.
Western sword fern are one option on the shade side of your area. The side with more light looks appropriate for some of these listed in “Northwest native plants for the sunny border”.
