Split maple tree trunk #766220

Asked August 07, 2021, 1:30 PM EDT

The trunk of my maple tree is split. Has been there a long time but now seems to be getting a bit bigger. Should I take any action? I have 2 photos.

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

Maples are notoriously thin barked. The tree can’t be healed or treated. It should be watched for rot because it can become a hazard tree and come down unexpectedly. I would start a replacement tree with the thought the maple may have to be taken down in 1-10 years. Hard to say because trees can survive a lot of damage.

OK - thanks very much.

Take care, be safe,
