Snake identification #766033

Asked August 06, 2021, 9:20 AM EDT

We have a pond by our house and a new resident. Can you identify what kind of snake this is? I have looked on line, but still can’t figure it out. Thank you so much.

Expert Response

Based on the photo, it looks like this could be a common watersnake (formerly the northern watersnake), Nerodia sipedon.  Their coloring can be quite variable, which may explain the difficulty identifying. although they are not venomous, they have a reputation for being somewhat aggressive. Below are sites with more information.

Thank you so much Luke.  We saw him again this morning.  Would love to catch him and transfer to a community pond/beach where I understand there are more. Good to know they can be aggressive.  I am not to terribly brave, but I am worrying about our frog and tadpole!
Thank you again,
Take care, Kathy
