These caterpillar-like insects hide in moist places in my garden, like if I cover newly planted seeds with feed sacks or boards to help them germinate. They don't obviously hurt plants or seedlings, but there can be hundreds in a moist area at this very dry and hot time of year.

These are millipedes. This is our most common one, the North American Millipede. If disturbed, they release an almond smell. They eat predominately decaying matter. They love the kind of situation you describe.
