Hydrangea looks unhappy #764840

Asked July 30, 2021, 4:15 PM EDT

Hi, my hydrangea looks unhappy with the brown sections on the base of the leaves. Any idea what this indicates? Thank you

Thank you for your question.  Most gardeners are dealing with leaf scorch on their hydgrangas due to high temperatures, and inadequate watering.  This is especially true if the plant is in full sun.  Are you able to supply more information about where the shrub is (in terms of sun and shade), how much watering you have given it during the last month, and what fertilizer you have supplied?  I can't tell very well, but it appears that there is not much mulch around the plant's base, which allows the soil to dry out, and then the leaves don't get enough water.  Thanks for more information!

I transplanted it from a sunny spot where it wilted daily to a fully shady spot a week ago.  Probably residual damage, will finish mulching now.

Be sure to water it well before adding mulch.  The larger the mulch (bark chips rather than shredded bark), the better the water will be able to get to the roots.
