Flagstone: ground cover between stones #764788

Asked July 30, 2021, 12:02 PM EDT

I have a flagstone patio that I have struggled with due to the spaces between. Ice plants from my hilled garden have transplanted themselves onto the flagstone, so I constantly attempt to get those out. I tried Elfin Thyme which is my favorite but it only grows in patches. I really want something similar to Elfin Thyme that might fill up the spaces between the flagstone pieces and keep the ice plants from growing there and also make the patio look nicer. It's mostly full sun and dry but I can water it if needed in the beginning to establish. What do you suggest? Thank you.

Hi, Julie,

Here is a Fact Sheet on xeriscape ground covers that do well in Colorado.

Here is a discussion of another thyme plant, Thymus praecox, which is on the list above.  It has some helpful information.

Finally, here is another list for Colorado ground covers.

I would suggest reading through the lists and trying some that sound good.  Maybe even do a couple and compare how well they compete with the ice plant.

Hope this helps!
