Native tree for planter box #764769

Asked July 30, 2021, 10:44 AM EDT

HI, We have a planter box that is 52"x52" by 29" deep that we would like to plant a native tree in. We are in down town Portland. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Expert Response

Growing a tree in a container is possible but I don’t have a specific list from Extension of which are best. If choosing between a couple choices, check back here and we can offer pros/cons between them to help you decide.

I suggest you talk with plant nursery staff about their suggestions and what is available in the marketplace. Take a photo of your area with you, and notes about growing conditions like height, width, sun exposure, wind, and watering options. Consider desired traits like evergreen, blooming, dwarf, bird-insect-human edibility. Also, “native” can be a challenging term to define, so if you are willing to consider cultivars or bred ornamentals based on native plants from anywhere in the Pacific Northwest you’ll have additional options.

OSU does have publications about gardening with natives, start with these from the Extension Catalogue. Growing in a container is a special situation requiring watering, fertilization and soil considerations. This 10-minute University page is a place to begin learning about it. There are also articles online about growing patio trees.
