Confirm this lawn weed is nutsedge. Or? #764762

We do not believe this is nutsedge. The stems on nutsedge have a characteristic triangular shape. I don’t see that in the picture you sent. Additionally the inflorescence (seed bearing flower head) in your picture is unlike that of nutsedge. Take a look at the images of nutsedge and related information in the following:

Rather, we believe that this is a grass called Barnyard Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). It is an annual grass and very common in yards in the Metro Area. It can be quite invasive due to its ability to produce huge amounts of seeds. The barnyard grass that you are holding is very close to seed release. Since it is an annual, all visible barnyard grass in your yard will die as temperatures cool Unfortunately their demise will come after their release of seeds for germination in 2022. It is best controlled by the use of a pre-emergent herbicide applied early (mid-April) in the spring. See the following for further information:
