purple royalty raspberries #764650

Asked July 29, 2021, 2:55 PM EDT

Hi- We have purple raspberries that seem to be very blahh in taste......not sweet at all. We live in NEK Vermont and these are established plants growing on the south side of our house getting mostly morning sun. What can we do to sweeten them up? Tim and Brenda Plastridge

Expert Response

Tom and Brenda,

Although your raspberries get morning sun, are they getting the required 6-8 hours for good fruit production to include flavor and sweetness? Also they should be planted in well draining soil.  Receiving 1 to 11/2 inches of water a week is also important.  Fruit quality is also influenced when fertilizer or compost is applied.  It should be done when the blossoms first open giving energy to the plant as it produces fruit. This is an excellent web site with details on growing raspberries with specifics in each section on purple raspberries. https://extension.unh.edu/resources/files/Resource000010_Rep10.pdf

I hope this information is helpful for next season harvest!
