Ant Identification Query #764249

Asked July 27, 2021, 3:16 PM EDT

Hey team, I just moved into a house and have noticed lots of these ants around the exterior of the house, as well as some that venture indoors. I am trying to identify them so I can know how to eliminate them. Can you help? Thanks, Andrea

Expert Response

Hi there - Welcome to your new home!

Ants are common indoor invaders in Oregon. They serve an important role in natural spaces, so we share space with them when we have natural spaces nearby. They send scouts looking for food that often walk in wandering lines. Scouts are found singly, and may be harmlessly passing through. When ants begin showing up in larger numbers, they might have found a food or water source indoors.

To identify your local ants, I encourage you to submit a sample to the OSU Insect ID clinic:

All the best!
