Honey Locust Tree turning yellow at top #763712

Asked July 24, 2021, 4:18 PM EDT

Hi: Suddenly, I noticed in the last week or so, my Honey Locust has yellow and brown leaves...only at the top of the tree. It seems to be getting worse day by day. It is located next to a small swale that is a drainage area for my yard and my neighbors yard... so I am wondering if the tree has gotten too much water. Michael at Harlequein Gardens thought it might be a disease when he saw the extent of it. I have attached photos. Any ideas what I might do for it?

Hi Carol,
It is difficult to diagnose what is going on with your tree from just the photo images you sent. Yellowing leaves can be a reaction to dry, hot weather, a pest problem, or nutrient deficiency. The extent of the damage to your tree indicates your tree is under stress. The yellowing only towards the top of the tree moves the issue(s) beyond just a watering issue.
The following fact sheets describe common diseases and insects/pests for Honeylocust trees: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/honeylocust-diseases-2-939/

I would suggest you look at the trunk of the tree starting from the base and move up as high as you can and search for any wounds or insect activity (exit holes). You can look for oozing sap, discolored bark, damage to the trunk. Take photos of anything unusual and send photos to us with the following in the subject line: "For Tree Team".
You can also contact a certified arborist. If you need help finding one go to www.isa-arbor.com to find a reputable arborist for your area. You can also request a Master Gardener Tree team visit (there is a small fee $25 per tree per hour). Send an email with "For Tree Team" to request a site visit.
Kind Regards,Boulder County Master Gardeners
