Bug ID #763594

Asked July 23, 2021, 5:30 PM EDT

I have an interesting egg cluster with tiny insects on the underside of an eggplant leaf—looks a bit like tiny ladybugs but It doesn’t match pictures of lady bug eggs etc. Is there anyone who could look at the leaf or a photo and give an ID.?

Expert Response

Marie,

Thank you for attaching an excellent image of newly hatched Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, Halyomorpha halys. It's true that the hatchlings resemble ladybugs, but it's also true that the egg cases are the wrong kind.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, often abbreviated as BMSB, are serious pests of commercial and home gardens. Then, too, they can be truly annoying nuisance pests in the fall when adults invade tall structures (houses and apartments) in the fall, making life miserable for people throughout the winter months.

As for these hatchlings, the preferred remedy is to immediately dispatch them either by squashing them or dropping them into a cup of soapy water. Pesticides are rarely effective.

Next, inspect the undersides of other leaves in your garden and landscape. Again, dispatch the BMSB on sight.

You'll find images and more information in this Pest Alert from the Oregon Department of Agriculture: click here.

Thanks for the excellent info!  I have destroyed them and will keep watching for more
