grass identification for forage #762741

Asked July 20, 2021, 9:59 AM EDT

Can you identify this grass that is predominant in our hayfields? The hay is being fed to buffalo, cattle and horses. If it is a fescue, what is its endophyte status and what problems will we have in feeding it? Thanks

Expert Response

Hello Agnes,

The sample cannot be identified by the picture.  However, it is not Fescue.  If it was Fescue, there would be no way telling the endophyte level from a photo.  You would need to send me more close-up photos of the grass blades and seed head for accurate identification.  My email is <personal data hidden> or text photo to<personal data hidden>.

Thanks.  Attached are some closeups...as close as I can get with an iPhone 6. Let me know if you need more.
Thanks.
