Coreopsis, lanceolata #762192

Asked July 16, 2021, 7:21 PM EDT

I have a photo of Coreopsis, lanceolata with a yellow center, mostly yellow petals, but also has white on the tips of all the yellow petals. i have looked at hundreds of Coreopsis pictures and not found one with white tips. Is this a fluke?

Expert Response

Hi,

It’s always recommended to send a photo when asking a question and even sending the photo you have would be helpful. I consulted the American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Garden Plants. Coreopsis or Tickseed is in the Asteraceae family with a genus of 80-100 species of annuals and perennials. Since you are referencing a photo which we have not seen it would be helpful for you to send this photo. The picture could have been taken with lighting that would cause the flowers to look like the yellow petals have white tips. I have not found any species of the Coreopsis that is characteristic of the plant having yellow petals with white tips so without further evidence I am considering that this was a photo taken with artistic license.

If you would like to send the photo of the Coreopsis you have, we can do some more research on this plant. There are new species being created by growers but would like to see the photo.

Thanks very much for contacting Ask Extension.
