Russian Elm Trees #761937

Asked July 15, 2021, 1:03 PM EDT

Hi! I have two large elm trees in my front property, but they don't look so well. The leaves are mottled with light colored spots, one tree has some bark that is peeling in a large spot. One of the trees dropped a lot of leaves this spring. I am wondering if there is someone from the extension office here in Longmont that could take a look?

Expert Response

Dear Sonya,

For Tree Team Visit requests, we're requesting that clients send us diagnostic photos and information as a first step.  Could you please send us some photos that include close-ups of the issues, any details you can share (e.g., do you see any insects and send photos in that case), as well as a further-back view that shows us the overall tree setting.  Anything else that you could include would be helpful (e.g., what direction is the peeling bark facing, that sort of thing).

Thank you,

Hello!

After examining a bit closer, and looking online, I see that I have Elm Beetles. I have attached a few photos, you can see some beetles in the closeup. The trees are on the West side of the property. I saw more peeling bark than one place, it's either North, NW, or SW.

Does the Extension office offer treatments?

Sonya, hi, here at the Colorado Extension we don't offer treatments, but here is a fact sheet about Elm beetles:

We also can't recommend specific tree companies, but check here to find a certified arborist:  https://www.isa-arbor.com/  They would be able to treat your elms safely and effectively.
