Can my 100-plus Linden tree be saved? #761434

Asked July 13, 2021, 8:57 AM EDT

I have a Linden tree in my front yard. It's over a hundred yrs old and taller than my two-story house. Several yrs ago an arborist came out and said he thought it would qualify to be a Champion American Linden. The storm, somehow, took the east side of the tree down vertically, and it even peeled the bark down to the wood on one side. The west side of the tree is untouched. I haven't been able to find an arborist to come out and look to see if the tree can be saved or if it will die. Someone suggested I contact you. Can you help me in regards to advice on whether it can survive and what to do? See pics below. The first shows how the bark is peeled, the second the bare wood, and the third is a pic from the side to show how large the side that came down is.

Expert Response

Hi Kathy,
There is no way to save this tree.  I recommend removal.  I can't tell from the photos if it is in imminent failure or not, but as soon as you can get it cut down, it should be done.
