Wild Grass #761192

Asked July 11, 2021, 9:53 PM EDT

Hello - Sorry for the multiple questions - but can you please help me confirm that that is wild / native grass growing in my yard? If possible, I'd like to get rid of it and replace it with the blue grass that is surrounding it. It also looks like crab grass? I'm struggling trying to understand the difference. Thank! Expert Response

Hi Matthew,

This looks like tall fescue, which is technically another lawn grass. There are no selective options to remove it from the bluegrass, so you can consider the following:

1. Learn to live with it

2. Try to dig out the clumps, extending 4-6" beyond the clump; then reseed or resod these areas (use chunks of grass from another part of your landscape)

3. Spray out the clumps using glyphosate (Roundup), which will take 2-3 applications. Then reseed or resod those areas.

4. Using glyphosate and wearing gloves, wipe a soaked paper towel or rag in glyphosate across the leaves. This will take 2-3 applications; then reseed or resod those areas.
