a couple of garden questions #760829

Asked July 09, 2021, 12:48 PM EDT

Hi! I have successfully planted container garden this year, after a pretty pathetic attempt last year. But, I have one cucumber plant that looks a bit ill. I've sent a pic.Is it leaf blight? And I saw I could spray it with a water mixed with a bit of baking soda? I also notice on this plant that a few of the tiny cucumbers are yellow. Also, I have a pepper plant that has some blackish spots where the limbs meet the main stem. And, one more question - is it ok that I see lots of, it appears, baby granddaddy long legs on the plants?

Expert Response

Hello,

I wouldn't spray the cucumbers with the water-baking soda solution, as this could cause phototoxicity to the leaves. Are you fertilizing? The plant looks "hungry". Container vegetables (and flowers) need regular fertilization because every time you water, you're leaching nutrients from the potting media. Find a fertilizer you like and apply it according to the recommendations on the label. You can also do a slow release pelleted form (apply it on top of the media) and combine it with a liquid feed (diluted in water).

The leaves appear to be the oldest ones? The new growth looks good. I would remove the oldest, most affected leaves.

The pepper looks completely normal to me!

Hi Allison!

It’s been a few weeks since I fertilized.  I will do that tomorrow!  So glad to hear all of this.  I am from the Midwest and I always thought I was good at growing things until I moved here! Haha!

Thanks again for your expert advice. I greatly appreciate it!
