Expert Response

We can't determine what's causing brown patches on the elm's leaves by viewing the photos.

The lesions resemble those caused by bacterial leaf scorch.  But scorch caused by drought might also be a factor.

Many other things cause leaf spots.  Go here to learn about them:

Generally speaking, tree and shrub health isn't seriously affected by leaf spot diseases. Those that cause frequent defoliation are an except.

Unless the leaf damage progresses significantly or causes defoliation there's probably little reason for concern.

If things take a turn for the worse, ask a certified arborist or forester to assess the tree's health onsite and recommend a course of action.

In the meantime, water the tree as needed until the ground freezes.
