Fungus? #760214

Asked July 06, 2021, 10:26 AM EDT

Hello! I had a client send the pictures I have attached. I believe it to be some kind of fungus. It is yellowish in color, kind of looks like bread and it does smear when you touch it. It started in the mulch and it has since moved to the lawn. It appears over night. Could you please tell me what this is, how to get rid of it or control it. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gladwin County MSU Extension.

This is a common fungus, known as "slime mold', and is completely natural.  There are many different types of slime molds-- these are the more interesting ones.  Here is an article written by one of my colleagues that will help you learn more.https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/unsightly_slime_mold_sighting_on_landscape_mulch  PS- Just search for images of slime molds-- I found myself entertained for 15 minutes!!  Yikes.
