How should this tree be planted? #759996

Asked July 05, 2021, 12:38 AM EDT

I purchased this honeycrisp apple tree from an online nursery. The growth of the graft is at a sharp angle off of the rootstock. Do I plant the tree with the rootsock growing vertically and the graft at a sharp angle? Or do I plant the rootstock at a sharp angle and the graft growing vertically? I've attached some pictures that will hopefully show what I am describing. Thank you for any help.

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.

The graft union should be two to three inches above the soil line and straight up and down. Because of the sharper angle than most you may need to stake the tree; be sure the wrap attaching the tree to the stake is loose.

Soak the roots 2-3 hours before planting; do not let them dry out or be exposed to sun and wind.

Make sure the hole is wider than deep and deep enough for the roots not to wrap.

After planting, apply shredded cedar mulch two to three feet away from the trunk and leave an inch or two so the mulch is not right up against the trunk.

Water regularly, especially in the hot, dry summer we are experiencing.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I'm sorry, but I'm still not quite clear on this. If you are able to tell from the pictures if they are sharp and detailed enough, which one would you say is closer to how the tree should be planted? Maybe I'm incorrect in how I am interpreting your reply, but it sounds like you're saying to plant it like I have in the picture ending in 2315, and then stake it graft to bring it into a better alignment with the rootstock. Is that correct? I sure would appreciate your further assistance. Thank you so much.

Hi Samuel,

Yes, it would be closer to the photo ending in 2315.  Your fruiting portion of your apple tree is then at an angle so you will need to stake it to help it grow straight. When you stake it you might want to use a wrap purchased for staking so you don't harm the trunk of your Honeycrisp apple tree.

That is great Samuel.

Please note the photo I attached was the wrong photo.  The graft union should be straight up and down and the honeycrisp tree will be at an angle.

Don't forget to wrap your tree from approximately November through April, if mild to April.

Best wishes with your apple tree.
