Bird feeder cautions #758352

Asked June 25, 2021, 11:16 AM EDT

We’ve seen news reports that we should discontinue putting out seed and suet bird feeders due to a contagious disease affecting birds eyes. Is this a problem in central Ohio and if so how long should we abstain from feeding birds.

Expert Response

Hi Marianne,

Reports of sick and dying birds have come in from central Ohio. There is little known about the disease currently, so the recommendations to take down and clean bird feeders include all of Ohio. Here is a fact sheet with more info -

The National Wildlife Health Center recommends taking down feeders for 7-10 days, and cleaning them before putting them back up. If you are seeing sick or dead birds in your area, you may decide to keep them down for longer. I'm sorry I don't have more specific recommendations than that, but we are working with a severe lack of knowledge. Hopefully we will get more information soon!
