Oak Disease #758177

Asked June 24, 2021, 2:24 PM EDT

Can you possibly identify what is going on with our tree. There is a dark, almost powdery, layer between the bark and tree. And it has what I would describe as a moldy smell. Only seeing it at the base. Hoping there is a way to treat it instead of having to take it down.

Expert Response

It looks like hypoxylon canker. https://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/library/landscaping/hypoxylon-canker-of-oaks/

Please have the tree evaluated by a certified arborist for further evaluation. Here is a link to help you find one in your area. https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist/arboristsearch

Thanks for the question.
