Need help with identifying Prairie plants #757961

Asked June 23, 2021, 3:27 PM EDT

Hello, we have several prairie plants in our garden that we can’t identify. Is it possible I could send you photos of these plants and have you send back the name of the plant or grass? Thank you Thad Schifsky Golden Valley

Expert Response

It is difficult identifying plants from a photo, but we try.  Multiple, high quality photos taken at various times and of various parts of the plant (stem, leaves, flowers, roots, and something to indicate size) would help us immensely.  But it might be more useful for you to key out your plants at a site such as this one:
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/

There are also several free plant-identification apps that can be helpful.

Hi Dennis,

We’re so glad you replied because we desperately need help with identifying several plants for which I have attached close-up photos and angles of all kinds for each plant. These are high-resolution photos and we totally understand the need for close-ups, full height, flowers, leaves, stems, etc.

Yes, we absolutely rely on the Minnesota wildflowers site that you pointed out below. It’s the best site for a prairie plant identification. And we’ve spent hours successfully identifying some of our plants but we are totally stumped on the the plants I’m sending you.

As an aside, we do have experience in identifying and managing prairie plants, as we were part of an NPS crew at the Cold Water Spring site in Minneapolis that was working on managing that Prairie for the national Park service.

I have attached my photos in order so they show multiple views of the same plant. I’ve also included photos of two grasses that we can’t identify.

I hope you can follow this mess of emails. There was a file size limit so I had to send you several emails.

To help you understand how many plants and grasses I’ve sent you, I have sent you photos of three plants and two grasses.

Thank you very much for your help with this!

The Question Asker Replied June 25, 2021, 5:38 PM EDT
In the future, it would be most helpful if you posted a single question for each plant you want identified.  That way we won't get lost in the list of duplicate photos.

We think plant number 1 is a kind of mint called germander:
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/germander

We think plant number 2 is bladder campion:
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/bladder-campion

We think plant number 3 is Canada goldenrod:
https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/canada-goldenrod

As for the grasses, we aren't sure, but it looks like there might be something native mixed in with a lot of weeds. I don't think they are worth saving, so I'd suggest you pull those.
Dennis in St. Louis Park Replied June 28, 2021, 4:13 PM EDT
Hi Dennis,

Thank you very much for identifying these plants. We were getting really frustrated with finding that plant that turned out to be a Campion. And I yanked the Campion out. I don’t know where that came from.

The plant that turned out to be a Germander also had us really stumped. That’s a new one for us and that’s why we enjoy this prairie plant identification so much and walking on prairies and studying prairies etc.

I’m going to resend a couple of those grasses because I still believe they are native. I will send them separately without the mess of emails I sent you earlier. I apologize for that.

Thank you again

Thad Schifsky
