Gypsy moth caterpillars #757921

Asked June 23, 2021, 1:29 PM EDT

I’ve lived in the same house for 32 years, never before had this problem. Gypsy moth caterpillars eating oak trees, climbing on house, pooping everywhere including an in ground pool that’s always been here. I realize nothing can be done, just wanted to make you aware of this highly infested area.

Expert Response

Thanks for contacting the Master Gardner Helpline.

As you mention, we are experiencing an outbreak of Gypsy Moths this season. I am attaching a factsheet provided by the UVM Entomologist, Margaret Skinner. However, there is a possibility that you could also have forest tent caterpillars or eastern tent caterpillars. For a definitive diagnosis and to develop a management plan, please contact Margaret directly @<personal data hidden> or <personal data hidden>. Please also provide good clear images of the caterpillars you are seeing to her, if possible.
