Reestablishing natural grass in Colorado foothills meadow #757854

Asked June 23, 2021, 9:12 AM EDT

Hello CSU, we live at 7500 feet and bought a home that has 2 acres in a beautiful meadow in the Morrison Colorado. Some of our grass in the meadow is thriving, and others are very patchy. We also have a significant amount of weeds in the patchy areas. We have tried to plant a foothills grass mixture from the Arkansas Valley seed company, but have ran short of moisture for a couple of seasons. We would also like to ask you what you you suggest for mowing the grass. The grass this year is 2 to 3 feet high in many places and starting to get seeds on the stocks. When should we mow the grass? Or should we let it go? We do want to do some fire mitigation protection for our home when the grass dries out. Thank you so much for your help, Keith Schneider, Morrison Colorado

Expert Response

Hello!

Giving the varying conditions of the last few years, I would recommend you let the grass go to seed, provided it is not close to your home. There are numerous reasons why the grass could be thriving more in some areas than others, I would suggest that you set a time to have a site visit with your county Extension Agent or regional Small Acreage Management Specialist.

In the meantime, you can consult the Intermountain Forage Guide as a reference on pastures in the mountains: Intermountain Grass and Legume Forage Production Manual - Range Management (colostate.edu)
