Deformed Delphinium Flowers #757807

Asked June 22, 2021, 6:49 PM EDT

We grow lots of delphinium here in Northfield, MN, Zone 4b. Most of our plants are 2 to 4 years old. This year, about half of our 100 or so delphiniums have distorted blooms. Nothing I have found online seems to match the issue we are having--distorted flowers, some of which do not open, and most of which are discolored and very dark. The foliage looks normal. I just went through and cut off the bad heads, hoping that subsequent growth will be normal. I can see no pest or fungus or bacteria with my naked eye. I am wondering if the buds were damaged with the late-May nights that we had close to freezing temperatures. We covered our annual flowers, but none of our perennials. I just heard from someone in Lakeville MN that she is experiencing thee same thing. Any idea what is going on? Thanks in advance.

Expert Response

Researchers have found that late frosts do effect Delphinium barbeyi/larkspur blossoms.  (Larkspur is in the same family.) Early frosts do not effect the blossoms. It is hypothesized that the buds are still small enough to be protected by the leaves.

Just to rule out insect or disease, I would open some of the buds and look for insects.  Also consider herbicide drift possibilities.  However, this is unlikely if the leaves are okay.

As you know, most pests/diseases of delphinium manifest on the leaves and stems first.  There is a good summary at the first website.  The second website is a technical review article which summarizes research that may be of interest even though they studied larkspur, a close relative in the same family.

I agree with your assessment that future buds/flowers should be okay confirming the late frost diagnosis.
